Remembering Aggie Bonfire

On November 18, 1999 at 2:30 AM, the Aggie bonfire fell and collapsed killing 12 Aggies and injuring 27 more. The Aggie bonfire tradition began back in the year 1909 by group of cadets burning a heap of trash to generate enthusiasm on campus to beat the infamous Aggie rivals, the Longhorns of the University of Texas, or as Aggies call them, "T.U.". Soon after the first bonfire, it became a long standing Aggie tradition. The process for building the bonfire became much more complex than the pile of trash they started with. It is a 5 stage process: Cut, Stack, Push, Finish, and Burn. Construction first began with "Cut" in late October, by obtaining wood by cutting down trees for free to clear out real-estate space with axes, which took several weekends. Next was "Stack", which students began a 3 week process by gathering the logs that were cut and wiring them together and shaping the eventual bonfire. Towards the end of "Stack" was "Push", where students worked around the clock in shifts to finish the bonfire in time for the eventual burn ceremony. In the finish process the "redpots" or upperclassmen finished off the 5th and 6th level of the stack. Then, the night before the biggest game of the year, Aggies gathered around the bonfire for the burning ceremony in which they doused it with jet fuel and burned the bonfire along with a shack on top painted burnt orange symbolizing their rival "T.U.". After the collapse on the 18th of November, the campus was eerily silent. Classes empty, students at the site of the collapse to offer their help in any way. An official memorial service was held less than seventeen hours after the collapse. Over 16,000 mourners packed Reed Arena to pay tribute to those who died and those who had spent all day trying to rescue the injured. At the end of the service, as A&M University President Ray Bowen presented roses to the families of the dead and injured students, the crowd spontaneously stood in silence, linking arms with those standing next to them, before quietly singing "Amazing Grace". Only after all of the rescue workers and family members had left the facility did the audience depart. Although it had been a tragedy the rivalry went on and the Aggies beat Texas 20-16. With the 10th year of reflection of this tragedy, Aggies are stronger than ever. Although the campus tradition was banned after, the tradition continued off campus. Many from the outside ask, Why do such a dangerous and senseless tradition. It is best explained by this famous Spirit of Aggieland quote, "From the outside looking in, you can't understand it. And from the inside looking out, you can't explain it." Perhaps even better stated by former Vice Student Body President of the University of Texas at Austin, "I learned something tonight. For all us Longhorns who discount A&M in our neverending rivalry, we need to realize one thing. Aggieland is a special place, with special people. It is infinitely better equipped than us at dealing with a tragedy such as this for one simple reason. It is a family. It is a family that cares for its own, a family that reaches out, a family that is unified in the face of adversity; a family that moved this Longhorn to tears. My heart, my prayers, and the heart of the UT student body go out tonight to Aggies and their family and friends as they recover from this great loss. Texas A&M, the Eyes of Texas are Upon You--and they look with sincere sympathy upon a family that has been through so much tragedy this semester." - Eric Opiela

Miles Austin? Yes, Miles Austin!

Miles Austin, Austin Miles, whatever his name is, that guy. That is what everyone has been calling number 19 of the Dallas Cowboys lately. But in the past couple of weeks the Miles Austin has come out with over 450 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns in two games. Anyone surprised? I am certainly not. Miles Austin was undrafted out of Monmouth University in New Jersey in 2006. Right out of free agency, Austin had an immediate impact for the Cowboys returning 29 kickoffs for 753 yards including a 93 yard touchdown return in a pivotal playoff game versus the Seattle Seahawks. After his rookie season Miles continued to get better, in 2007 Austin averaged 15.2 YPC (yards per catch) and the next season averaged 21.4 YPC. 2009 to the outside world has seemed to be Miles Austin's breakout year, but Miles Austin has always been Miles Austin and has not always been given his opportunity to perform. In fact, in Austin's record setting 250 yard receiving game in Kansas City, he was not supposed to start. The ONLY reason he did start that game was because "pro bowler" Roy Williams was hurt from the previous upset against Denver. Like any young player would do, Austin took advantage of his start and proved to the world and to his coaches that he is the superstar they have been looking for to replace the previous diva Terrell Owens. Then the next week to prove it is not a fluke, he caught balls for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns against a solid Atlanta defense. Ladies and Gentleman, why you are all surprised by Miles Austin, I have no clue. He has shown over and over again through pre-season and even in regular season games and playoffs games that he is a star in this league. This, again, just proves that going undrafted says nothing about a football player. Tony Romo, Wes Welker, future Hall of Famer Adam Vinateri, Willie Parker, Antonio Gates, Priest Holmes, Rod Smith, future Hall of Famer Kurt Warner, and Warren Moon, can all attest that the draft does not determine your legitimacy in this league.

A&M vs. OSU

I drove over one hundred miles this weekend to see the fightin' Texas Aggie football team and historic Kyle Field. In the game, it was close against Oklahoma State University, who at the time was ranked number seventeen in the nation among the AP poll. It was a back and forth affair with OSU scoring the first ten points then A&M the next fifteen. In the end it was the more experienced OSU team that came out victorious with a 37 to 31 win in College Station. Although A&M lost, the spirit of Aggieland was still evident and supporting of the team. Many stayed after with the team to sing Sprit of Aggieland and supported the team in the tough loss. The Aggie spirit just re-affirmed my beliefs in A&M and that A&M is one of the most friendliest campuses in the nation and they never give up even when they lose. Gig'em Aggies!

Who Am I?

Five foot ten. Skinny. Brown hair. Hazel eyes. Funny. Smart. Weird. A listener. Wise. Loving. Caring. Understanding. A worker. Servant's heart. All are terms that have been used to describe myself, whether true or not, these are the characteristics that people have seen in myself. I come from a large suburb just north of Dallas called, Plano. Plano is home to over a quarter of a million people and counting. I graduated from Plano East Senior high with a class of fifteen hundred students, that took nearly four hours to commence graduation. Plano is home to such superstars as Deon Sanders, Michael Irvin, and Lance Armstrong. Coming from such a large city I have become accustomed to the competitive nature of school and of life. At Plano East Senior High I played numerous sports such as football and basketball. Through these sports and coaches, I learned the meaning of team work, leadership, and how to be successful. Along with sports, I also participated in the band. I played the tenor saxophone for 7 years including middle school and high school. Through reading, writing, and marching music, I was taught great discipline and patience. Being from the Dallas Fort-Worth area, I also grew up in the bible belt, hence religion has played a critical role into my upbringing. Through the church I have learned about family, life, and death. Through the church I got involved in a incredible amount of community service projects such as Habitat for Humanity and working for the food pantry. I also led our congregation in worship many times on Sunday mornings. Music, along with sports, is my passion. Music is how I express myself, and things that I strongly have faith in. Texas A&M has always run deep in my family blood, so there was no question where I wanted to go to school. What I actually want to do? That's a different story. I want to do anything from law, sports agency, or music ministry. Eventually, like any young college student, I will find what I want to do, and whatever it is that I do, I know I will succeed.
